It seems like every year in baseball, there are like 20 different wild things that happen on Opening Day. One of those things usually ends up being one hitter who just goes off to start the season and everyone freaks out about him. The dumb jokes about how many homers they are on pace for get made and people rush to pick them up in their fantasy leagues. The funny thing is, it’s always someone very random.
This year’s guy was Matt Davidson. He’s one of the obscure Chicago White Sox that most fans have never even heard of before yesterday. Well, Davidson cranked three homers and now everyone knows about him. The question isn’t whether this is legit, because it’s not. He won’t be ripping the ball all over the yard all season and most likely, you’ll have completely forgotten about him by June.
There is something to think about here though and that is whether this was a one day thing, a one week thing or if this has legs for a month or so. We’ve seen other random guys smack a few homers to open the year and then go right back to obscurity. We’ve seen others keep it up a bit and be at the top of the leaderboards heading out of April. I want to know, because I want to evaluate whether Davidson is a guy I should ride in fantasy baseball or DraftKings. Of course, I won’t know for sure and I’m just going to have to go out and gamble on him to find out.
This is another reason that I love baseball. Weird things happen and even though it’s just been one game, we analyze them hard. Matt Davidson is just the latest example, and he won’t be the last.
*Matt Davidson’s hair is dope and for that reason I may just bet on this guy to actually be good.
