Recently, the new NBA Hall of Fame class was announced. The players that got the call are Jason Kidd, Steve Nash, Ray Allen and Grant Hill. This is the part where we sing that song about how one of these things is not like the other. Guess which one that is? Grant Hill. He shouldn’t be a Hall of Famer, don’t @ me.
You see, all of these other guys make a TON of sense. Ray Allen, for my money, is the best shooter of all time outside Steph Curry. He wasn’t just a shooter either, he could do it all when he was a Buck, a Sonic and even a Celtic for a bit. He was a 10-time All Star and won a few titles while banging threes in the clutch. Plus, he’s Jesus Shuttlesworth.
Jason Kidd was the best point guard when I was real young and his accolades speak for themselves. He’s an 10-time All Star, 6-time All NBA, 9-time All Defense guy. He was the man on the Nets teams that dominated the East in the early 2000’s. Even when he lost a bunch of steps and was playing for the Mavericks late in his career, he was able to contribute and win a title. Think whatever you want about him (he’s not a good guy off of the court) but he is one of the best to run point ever.
The best point guard in this group though, was Steve Nash. I was a HUGGGGGGE fan of Nash and the Suns teams he ran. They transformed how offense is played in the NBA and though they didn’t win anything, they might have been the most fun group to watch in the last 15 years. Plus, Nash was a TWO-TIME league MVP. He dropped dimes on another level and his shooting efficiency was otherworldly. Nash was an 8-time All Star and was 7-time All NBA. I just wish he and Dirk had won a title together, that’s my only gripe.
Anyway, back to Hill. I totally understand how talented he was and this has nothing to do with my bias against him as a Dukie or a terrible announcer. He just doesn’t have what it takes to be a Hall of Fame. Was he an all time talent? Yes. His prime was way too short though. That sucks because it was due to injury and not his fault, but that’s the way it goes. I know that not every sport is the same, but in other Hall of Fames, this wouldn’t be a question at all. There are SO MANY baseball players or football players that have had careers cut short due to injury and they are held out of the Hall. Maybe the Basketball Hall of Fame is just too lenient? I don’t know, but if you think Grant Hill deserves to make it, you just might be too nice.
