Giancarlo Stanton Strikes Out 5 Times In Yankee Home Debut

Giancarlo Stanton went 0-for-5 with 5 strikeouts in the Yankees 11-4 win over the Rays on Tuesday. Ah the great platinum sombrero. Giancarlo joins an elite club with that milestone.

This is problematic in a lot of ways. First off, not a great look for Stanton in his home debut. His fifth and final strikeout came with the bases loaded, in a situation where all of the Yankee fanbase wanted to see a grand slam yabo out of their prime offseason pickup. After the very small Yankee crowd rose to their feet in hopes that the giant would jump all over the ball with the bases juiced, Stanton let them down by striking out. Then to top it off, Giancarlo heard it from the 100 people in attendance at Yankee Stadium as they all booed him while he walked back into the dugout with his head down.

Bad visual for Giancarlo in his Yankee home debut. But hey, it was cold and he’s not used to playing baseball in cold weather so let’s use that as an excuse! Stanton was also 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position, which you don’t expect from the guy who led the majors in RBI last season with 132.

At least Didi Gregorius picked up Stanton’s slack. He raked in this one for the Yanks, going a perfect 4-for-4 with two bombs, a double, a base hit and eight RBIs. It’s only been five games, but Didi is scorching out of the gate and owns a 1,635 OPS to start the 2018 campaign.

Giancarlo Stanton better hope to get his bat going or the Yankee fanbase will continue booing his at bats. Stanton has never played for a winning club before… maybe he doesn’t have the clutch gene to hit when games actually matter. We’ll just have to see.
