The 2018 season will mark a memorable occasion for the Green Bay Packers, as they are set to open their one hundredth year with a patch sewn on their jerseys. 100 years as an organization is an incredible span having legends such as Curly Lambeau, Don Hutson, Vince Lombardi, Bart Starr, Ray Nitschke, Jerry Kramer, Mike Holmgren, Brett Favre, Ron Wolf, Reggie White, Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy. The list of Pakcers legends could go on forever. What better way to open the season than with a bang against a top team to show this franchise the homage it deserves? The Packers have a list of opponents on their schedule this season that look like strong contenders. Here are three of those teams that could open against the Packers in a Lambeau Field home clash.
San Francisco 49ers – Finished last season with a record of 6-10. They traded for QB Jimmy Garoppolo who ended the season 6-0 as a starter and 8-0 overall in his career now. San Fran went out and signed some free agents like CB Richard Sherman and RB Jerick McKinnon. Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch have their team on the fast-track to be legit contenders for the next decade in the NFC. The Packers and 49ers were rivals in the mid 90s to the early 2000’s, and picked up that rivalry when Jim Harbaugh ascended San Francisco to the top of the conference in 2012 and 2013, and they could re-spark this rivalry with a big homer opener at Green Bay.
Atlanta Falcons – This team is two years removed from a Super Bowl collapse and loss to the Patriots. They finished with a record of 10-6, sneaking in the playoffs in week 17. They went into the Colosseum in Los Angeles and a beat tough Rams team. Atlanta had their season ended in the Divisional Round by eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. They did not lose a great deal of talent in free agency and still are an experienced contender. It could put a stamp on the season starting with a win against the Falcons for the Packers. These two teams have battled it out the past decade. Recently Falcons have had the Packers number and Packers would love to get some revenge here in a home opener.
New England Patriots – Here is the creme de la creme of home openers for the Packers. Patriots finished as one of the top teams in the NFL last season at 13-3 and lost a shootout to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl. I guarantee Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and the rest of the Patriots are looking for one more shot to get to the promise land for another title. Packers and Patriots have only played once while having Rodgers & Brady as starting QB’s. That only game was in 2014 in week 13 and win for the Packers over the Patriots in Green Bay. I know not only Packers fans, but all NFL fans in general would be thrilled to watch another Brady versus Rodgers shootout to open the Packers 100th season at football mecca Lambeau Field.
