UFC 229 – Reaction to the Mayhem

For those of you who haven’t seen, Khabib Nurmagomedov successfully defended his lightweight belt against Conor McGregor last night, he was able to dominate the first two rounds, wade his way through the third and then successfully choke Conor out in the 4th. Now, that should be the end of the story, but it will not be. At the culmination, Khabib started walking over towards Conor McGregor’s corner and started screaming at them, after about ten seconds of screaming between Khabib and Conor’s Jiu-Jitsu coach Dillon Danis, Khabib jumped the cage and tried to get at Danis. From what I saw, after Khabib jumped the cage, Conor tried to get over to defend his guys. Simultaneously, one of Khabib’s teammates jumped on the cage to get to the brawl, I do not know if he was going to get Khabib or Danis but as they both got on the cage, Conor threw a punch at this other cornermen. This other cornerman turned his attention to Conor, and rightly he should have. What isn’t right is that two other Team Khabib members went after McGregor more than just the first cornerman’s retaliation. Meanwhile, Danis and Team Khabib member Rizvad Magomedov are going at anyone and everyone they can get their hands on.

The members of Khabib’s team are tough to identify, I know the fighter who was suckered by Conor while they were both on the cage was Islam Makhachev and I know that Zubaira Tukhugov was the second one to go after him, as well as two other’s I can’t identify. If cooler heads do prevail, I believe Islam Makhachev will be allowed to continue fighting in the UFC, because he was ultimately defending himself. Tukhugov will likely be released from his contract as he was the attacker in their scuffle. Attacker #’s 3 and 4 I cannot identify.

Luke Rockhold and Daniel Cormier, who have had rather insignificant skirmishes after fights came into the cage to calm down their teammate Nurmagomedov, who has made his way back into the cage after he was wrangled away from the melee and the two of them did great. I also want to send props out to Dana White for his handling of this, I’m typically very critical of him but as a leader, he shined in the chaos.

The shitty thing about all of this is that I should be talking about the brilliant performances of the card. Anthony Pettis and Tony Ferguson took part in an absolute war where they both looked like their best selves. Derrick Lewis gained the second-best comeback in UFC history with his KO of Alexander Volkov. Dominick Reyes arrived among the top of the division with a masterful performance against Ovince St. Preux. The bottom line is a beautiful night in MMA is now tarnished.
