UFC Moncton Preview -Light Heavyweight Battles and MMA Meme King fighting on Saturday.

The UFC Octagon heads to Moncton, New Brunswick Canada for UFC Fight Night Smith Vs. Volkan. Fun Fact: I was considering making the trip up to Moncton for this fight night, but instead of driving the eight hours to another nation, I’ll be drinking at my former collegiate institution in a mascot costume. Anyways, let’s jump into the card.

Light Heavyweight: Misha Cirkunov (-385) Vs. Patrick Cummins (+291)

In a Light Heavyweight battle, two relatively unknown top 15 fighters looking to move up the rankings. Misha Cirkunov hasn’t been seen since his disastrous 2017 year where he took huge losses to Volkan Oezdemir and Glover Teixeira. Misha is still a big player in the division and had some impressive wins over the likes of Nikita Krylov and Ion Cutelaba. His opponent has conversely had a great 2017, with wins over Jan Blachowicz and Gian Villante. Even though he lost his most recent bout to Corey Anderson, Cummins showed that he can hang with the top of the division. I believe that if the fight goes to the ground, Cirkunov will submit Cummins. if the fight stays standing it will probably go to decision. Just based on those self-odds, I’m picking Cirkunov to win. Featherweight: Artem Lobov (+431) Vs. Michael Johnson (-635)

Artem Lobov is a great fighter to have in the UFC solely for the purpose of Memes. MMA Reddit loves the guy and uses his quotes, friendship with Conor McGregor and fights in so many cool/funny media items. Artem was disappointed earlier this month however as Zubaira Tukhugov, his original opponent was pulled from the fight as a result. Thankfully, new Featherweight Michael Johnson stepped in to fight him. Michael Johnson is a tough fighter to predict because sometimes he can massively disappoint as a favorite and sometimes he can one-punch top Lightweight contenders such as Dustin Poirier. Normally, I wouldn’t pick someone who is 2-4 in their last six bouts, but I actually have to as both Lobov and Johnson have that recent record. I’m picking Johnson, not only because he missed weight and fighters who have missed weight are resoundingly positive record-wise, but because Lobov’s best victory is only over Teruto Ishihara. Light Heavyweight: Anthony Smith (+138) Vs. Volkan Oezdemir (-164)

Anthony Smith has looked like a much better version of himself fighting up at 205 pounds. In his two fights at Light Heavyweight, he defeated two former Light Heavyweight title holders in Rashad Evans and Shogun Rua. Given, Evans was on his way out of the sport and Rua was training for a different opponent throughout his training camp, but Smith looked spectacular in both. His opponent on Saturday night similarly came out of nowhere. To start his UFC career, Volkan defeated Ovince St. Preux on short notice and then dominated Misha Cirkunov and Jimi Manuwa to earn a title shot against Daniel Cormier at UFC 220. Now, Oezdemir looks to rebound against the Light Heavyweight division’s biggest prospect in Anthony “Lionheart” Smith. Now, when I look at their records, I see that Anthony Smith, while having much more cage experience, has also been on the receiving end of some brutal Knockouts, namely to Thiago Santos. Volkan Oezdemir has been able to Knockout some of the divisions best and he did so in quick fashion and I expect “No Time” to finish the fight within the first three rounds. Volkan Oezdemir Def.
