The 2019 PGA Tour Season Opener went to Xander Schauffele thanks to a Final Round 62 that featured 1 Eagle, and 8 Birdies to offset the one bogey he made on the first hole, one of the birdies came on the 18th Green to put him one ahead of Gary Woodland where he stayed when Woodland failed to birdie the Par 5, 18th. It is Schauffele’s 4th win on the PGA Tour all coming in the last 18 months which has vaulted him into the top 20 of the OWGR.
For Woodland who played the weekend with a heavy heart after his grandmother passed away on Friday Night, it’s a story all too familiar as it’s the ninth time in his PGA Tour career he’s lost a 54 hole lead. Many were expecting a Sunday charge from Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy Thomas did his part with a 65, but McIlroy could only manage a 72.
This win, of course, secures Schauffele his spot back in Maui 12 months from now at next years tournament of Champions.
